The Effects of Video Games on Children Essay Example for Free
The Effects of Video Games on Children Essay ââ¬Å"Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master,â⬠says Norwegian politician Christian Lous Lange (1930, no page). Indeed, technological progress made a step forward in humansââ¬â¢ civilization, changed peopleââ¬â¢s lives and brought new innovations. Virtual reality, as a part of this progress, gave an opportunity to have a look at the world built on imagination with a possibility to be involved in all actions happening there. Computers, PlayStations and other gaming platforms allowing people to interact with a virtual gaming world are becoming popular today, especially among children. Definitely, some video games positively impact on childrenââ¬â¢s learning skills at schools or colleges, even showing better results in their education. However, these games are one of the controversial issues existing presently. On the level with researchers revealed positive sides of virtual gaming, there have been conducted many other types of research, which discovered some negative effects caused by virtual games. On the one hand, the positive effects of digital games can be linked with an academic education of children. These games can teach young people some subjects at schools or universities, for example, algebra and geometry (Corbett et al., 2001). One of the reasons for this can be that children act actively while playing video games instead of just listening or watching, which make computer games good teachers. Moreover, a practice of video games for educational purposes may be helpful for migrant children. There are several reasons for this such as the possibility to change languages, an opportunity to repeat tasks which were difficult for international students and other reasons. For instance, this practice was successfully used by the Pennsylvania Department of Migrant Education to teach international students (Winograd, 2001). Turning to the negative effects, a serious concern about digital games attributes to violent games, which are gaining popularity among children, whereas educational and challenging games are becoming less popular. Perhaps the most problematic issue connected to the violence in games is the formation of aggression in childrenââ¬â¢s behavior. According to Park (2014), new research has proven that those children who are addicted to sit hours playing video games are more likely to act themselves in a hostile way than those who are far from spending lots of time in front of gaming platforms. Shooting at people and killing them, acts of stealing and kidnapping, and a clear vision of bleeding profusely ââ¬â all these factors are responsible for the appearance of kidsââ¬â¢ aggressive attitude towards other people. But aggressiveness is not only problem. Other behavioral problems are also caused by violent games such as making some actions normal whereas they are abnormal. For insta nce, well-known game ââ¬Å"Grand Theft Autoâ⬠gives a clear vision of actions which are terrible in reality, such as hiring prostitutes and murdering them to take money back, killing pedestrians by driving on the sidewalk in GTA world, carrying out an attack on people randomly and others (Wendling, 2014). In fact, the history shows that over 125 million of duplicates of GTA were sold which makes this game one of the best sellers (Video Game Sales Wiki, 2013). Additionally, demented activities in some video games are awarded with virtual money, reputation and some points, which can spur on children to realize abnormal and even criminal actions in real world. In 2013 two girls from Italy murdered one man and stole his money and then told the police that they felt as playing GTA while committing the crime (Corriere Della Sera, 2013). There can be observed other negative effects too related to behavioral problems caused by violent games. More studies should be undertaken to analyze all these effects in order to minimize negative consequences carried by them. Similarly, we have to concern about non-behavioral effects of virtual games on children as well. First of all, video games lead to deterioration of childrenââ¬â¢s social skills. According to studies made by a group of specialists, there was found that children addicted to playing games displayed a lower level of social skills compared to normal students (Zamani et al., 2010). The reason for this can be that young people devote their free time to video games instead of talking with coevals and friends, which, obviously, arouses different troubles with communication. The research concluded that children having exposure to playing games avoid communicative relations (Zamani et al., 2010). The explanation concerning why children continuously play video games wa s given in the research: video games are more enjoyable, inform about others, help some children to feel themselves not alone, somehow make children forgotten about existing problems, and video games give an opportunity to participate in game actively and directly (Zamani et al., 2010). Social skills are important in the formation of individuals since relationships and interactions with other people built on communication are pivotal. However, negative effects of video games on childrenââ¬â¢s social skills continue to worry the majority of people, especially parents. Furthermore, health problems caused by video games are one of the major problems to concern about. Since children may seat sufficient time controller-in-hand, they spend less time on physical activities. Hence, obesity may be a great threat to their health problems. Accordingly, one research indicated that children who play virtual games more than 1.5 hours are more inclined to have obesity problems than those who spend less than 1.5 hours (Rehbein et al., 2010). In addition, vision problems triggered by sitting hours in front of the monitor may serve as another example for health-related problems about video games. Parts of the eye such as pupil, cornea, and iris are vulnerable for long viewing on electronic devices, contributing to eye strain (Gillespie, 2002). Thus, this may have negative outcomes such as deterioration of childrenââ¬â¢s vision. Another example of health problem caused by computer games is an epileptic seizure. That is why all video game industries are obliged t o have epilepsy warnings on goods they produced in order to prevent this illness. There are more health problems triggered by video games, especially, among children as ââ¬Å"developingâ⬠population, since they have recently started their growth in both physical and mental characteristics. In conclusion, technology is not a good or bad invention, it depends on people in what way they use it. Similarly, virtual games have many positive effects in education even giving a better performance of students in academia. Many types of research have proven that interactive computer games are good teachers and may be helpful for migrant students, because of an active interaction with the virtual gaming world, language changing possibilities for international students and repetitiveness of tasks. However, other researchers have shown that violent games may cause some behavioral and non-behavioral problems, which represent a great danger for young people. Behavioral problems include aggressiveness in children, caused by violent actions in the game and non-behavioral problems include deterioration of childrenââ¬â¢s social skills, as a result of lack of communication. Additionally, health-related problems are also one of the negative effects of video games. Illnesses such as the d eterioration of the eyesight, caused by an extensive viewing of the monitor, obesity, which is triggered by a lack of physical activity, epileptic seizure, and many other health problems, are things which needed to be concerned about by everyone. Finally, even though video games have more bad consequences on children rather than positives, with an effort to get rid of negative effects we should save positive effects of video games.

Skills for Success Essay Example for Free
Skills for Success Essay As years passed by, several events have transpired that have shaped the course of world history. Along with this, people and the society have also experienced an evolution wherein the ways and standards of living have been tremendously modified to suit the needs of the changing times. As a result, people have become more innovative and creative in dealing with changes. Because of this reaction, society was able to improve and enhance the manner people exist in their natural habitat. What is more interesting and beneficial effect of this development is the realization of people to further build up their capabilities and potentials to be better at what they do whether personally and professionally. Moreover, in order to thrive in this present social condition, one must possess the necessary skills in order to succeed. This trend is obviously manifested in the corporate world wherein sets of criteria are established to ensure that businesses profit and at the same time provide the high-quality products and services to customers. Due to the lucrative benefits and opportunities that the field of business offers, many are enticed to become a part of it making this field highly competitive. In order to excel at oneââ¬â¢s chosen career in the corporate world, an individual must possessed fundamental skills that will help him/her to be successful. There are three things to consider when aspiring in being brilliant and outstanding in the global society. First, one must be motivated. Motivation is a vital factor in the accomplishment of oneââ¬â¢s goals and objectives. Without this, the materialization phase of the plan will not take place. Based on my personal experiences, being motivated was the key in finishing my studies in high school. During that my phase of my life, I was faced with many temptations to stray away from my dreams. But since I was determined to be a ââ¬Å"somebodyâ⬠in the upcoming future, I productively finished my secondary education which also facilitated my success while I was in college. The second essential skill for success is the ability to easily adapt and be flexible. These two skills are interconnected because to be able to adapt to a new environment or condition, an individual must first have the capacity to be flexible which is exhibited by being open-minded and resilient. In every endeavor that people get into, they must always try to be flexible at all times so that the tasks at hand can be done without any setbacks which can minimize the time and effort put into the project or research. By doing this, the chance of forging healthy relationships with other people would be most likely which is needed in guaranteeing a spot in the corporate ladder. Furthermore, the third and last must-have skill would be critical thinking. This particular skill is essential in making significant decisions that can aid in progressing oneââ¬â¢s career in the professional world and elevating oneââ¬â¢s status in the society. If an individual possess this skill, he/she will definitely go along way in the corporate world because there is a saying ââ¬Å"think first before you act. â⬠Overall, the three mentioned skills will not be able to contribute to the success of an individual on their own. They must be combined together in order to get the best results. Motivation, flexibility and critical thinking are skills that complement one another. If one is missing, the likelihood of performing well in a global setting would be greatly reduced. So individuals should pursue trainings and education that will help them develop these skills. As mentioned, the real world is very aggressive so in order to get ahead of the pack, one should always strive to be the best in their respective fields. This can be achieved by constantly practicing these skills and continuously generating new positive skills that can be very beneficial for oneââ¬â¢s career and personal life as well.

Introduction about the entrepreneur that I interviewed: Mr.Vasan founder of VDMIE Pvt.Ltd. Graduated as a Computer Engineer from IIT Madras in the year 2006. Like any other people he doesnt want to work for a company, he wanted to do something different from normal. He wanted to make a change in the society by helping people in the form of providing job for them. Hence he started his own company. His first business was creating Smileys and Emoticons for different websites. He named it as Humecons (http://www.humecons.com/HomePage.aspx). He did this business as part time. He knew this business will eventually wont give much of a profit. Soon he started his second venture business called virtual makeover. This business is all about virtually dressing you up through online and you can see yourself whether that particular dress or hair style or even gold ornaments and sun glasses too is suitable is to you or not(http://www.1000lookz.com/). The idea is very simple and the toughest part is making that idea in to reality. He did this with ease. First he started writing codes for different companies who wants too put up their products online for virtual makeup for the end user. As the time went by and also due to the sudden rise of Apple and Android based smart phones made his business more profitable than ever before, reaching more and more users every day. The expected revenue for the year 2011 -2012 is 200,000 USD which is phenomenal for the 3 year old business. His skills and qualities: Persistence: His first business wasnt profitable but he didnt give up easily, he did hang in there thinking new ideas, tweaking his thinking process. His organization is small with 16 employees but the work they are doing is very big process and they cover huge customer base through different platforms. So due to his decision making skills they are making good profits. People skills: In his line of business the difference between success and failure is how you deal with different people. He is doing well in terms of people skills, because he managed to get the contract with the mobile giants like Google and Apple and different other private vendors. This was made possible because of the quality of his product and usability across different kind of people in different geographical locations. Ethics and morals: He stood for the quality of product rather than any product which gives him the money. For him money comes second, he stood by his morals and ethics till now which was the good sign for a successful entrepreneur. He wants to do good service and product offering rather than false promise. He maintained to do that part well. Time management: Time management is crucial for any kind of business. There are lot of people depend upon the product of yours, if the product is not delivered in time business will get affected. He planned everything in such a way that there wont be a delay in his product completion and distribution. This is also one of his qualities which were crucial for his business. Calculated risk taker: He is not a gambler but then he did take lot of risks but it was well thought and calculated rather than reckless which helped throughout his business career. He went in to software programming business which was well occupied at that time he entered in this business, but he was so sure his product will be preferred among the competitors. Cautiotly optimistic: Every entrepreneur dont have negative frame of mind. He always expected the unexpected and waiting optimistically for his time and he did manage to do well and he got the results after the strings of failure. It is not easy to compete in a market where competition is fierce. His quality of being optimistic made the difference for him. Finance: One of the important parts of business is financing it. He financed his business by doing part time high end consulting job for companies in America. He didnt depend upon investors and bankers for the source of money. Hence he is free from any debts. What did I learn from this interview? I learnt few things from this interview which will come in handy in future when I start my own business. They are How to start a business How to sustain the business How to start a business? I learnt that answer to these questions cannot be explained in a single word. Its a lifelong process and you need commitment and patience and also should be ready for a heart break. Should know what am I doing: Am I going to start a new business or start a business which is already existing, shall I buy into a business or join multi-level marketing or I could go with something I love or something which will make money. There are so many options out there and it is not easy to decide which way to go. But I feel I should do a business which I love because it will give self-satisfaction. 2. What are the things that I need to start business: After deciding what business to go in one has to find out do I have necessary skills, say if one wants to do catering service one should have a good cook, if I want to start a online business I should know basic HTML. I should make a list about what business needs and what I need to achieve success. Then I have to check do I have knowledge and skills if not have to find a way to get it. 3. Financial constraints: This is the basic question where every entrepreneur will ask themselves when they start a business. This will impact a business at start. Say for example if I want to start a restaurant business but I have only 2000$ and couldnt find investors or cant get a bank loan then I have to rethink my entrepreneurship ambitions until financial situation improves. To find out about how much money needed to start a business one has to do complete and honest market research before they start a business and also come up with strong business plan. 4. How much money will I make? The revenue depends upon so many factors and it is really hard to find. Because the estimation often varies and I can ever know until I try it. But having some kind of idea will motivate me to work. So it is recommended to have a high estimate to achieve greatness. 5. Exit Strategy: Having a exit strategy doesnt mean that giving up. It is all about planning and one should know when to say good bye. Exit strategy should tie with objective of the business. One has to decide between selling the company for a sizeable sum or start a new business. Those who dont have exit strategy will struggle to meet the goals that they set for their business. A realistic exit strategy is crucial part of the business plan. How to sustain the business: By maintaining the positive cash flow: This can be done through various safety measures and proper budgeting and also finding out only necessary resources rather buying resources and wasting it. By having a competitive advantage: This can be done by introducing new technology in the business rather using the old time consuming process. First mover advantage: To sustain the business one has to diversify their business by moving to new location and gaining advantage there. Proper Advertising and Marketing: Advertising is one of the important piece of sustainable strategy, without that existence of the company wont reach the people. Hence proper care should be taken to ensure enough money is been divided for marketing and advertising alone. I conclude by saying that the person I interviewed is indeed an entrepreneur and doing legitimate business in Chennai, India. In the process I personally learned a lot about what business is all about and the part of an entrepreneur in it.

Unification of Italy and Germany Essay -- History
Unification of Italy and Germany By 1871 both the kingdom of Italy and the empire of Germany were united. Even though both countries used popular trends to that time, both liberalism and nationalism, the process unifying these two countries was very different. The end result was Germany emerging as a strong nation and Italy appropriately, the weaker. Italyââ¬â¢s problems started with the fact that it didnââ¬â¢t have one main ruler, but two people and a concept, resulting in a different approach to the unification. Gulseppe Mazzini had a radical program focusing on a centralized democratic republic based on universal suffrage and the will of the people. Vincenzo Gioberti, who was a catholic priest called for a federation of existing states under the presidency of the pope. Then there were the people who favored leadership toward the autocratic kingdom of Sardenia. Sardeniaââ¬â¢s rule was much more popular to the middle class than the other two because Sardenia appeared to be a liberal, progressive state displaying national unification. That is what the people were striving for. They thought Mazziniââ¬â¢s ideas too radical- and they were trying to get away from religion running the nation as it had done in the past. They wanted a distinct separation between church and state. Cavour was the man who made the change, but he sought unity only for northern Italy to become a greatly expanded kingdom of Sardenia. ââ¬Å"In the 1850ââ¬â¢s Cavour worked to consolidate Sardenia as a liberal state cap...

Master Harold vs No Exit Essay -- Literary Analysis, Sartre, Fugard
The setting of a play is extremely vital. It could a form of symbolism, foreshadowing, or it can affect the characters in the play. The is exactly the case in both No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre and ââ¬Å"Master Haroldâ⬠â⬠¦and the boys by Athol Fugard. The setting in both plays contain of one room that mainly consists of three major characters. The setting has an enormous impact on the behavior of the characters. The time period in which both plays are form also effect the style of writing and the characters. No Exit has an existentialist style of writing were as ââ¬Å"Master Haroldâ⬠â⬠¦and the boys was written in the apartheid era of South Africa. Both books have similar settings, but also involve some dissimilarity. The stage directions and the dialogue of the characters tell the audience that the play is set in one room. The number of characters that are going to be represented in the play are seen in the first scene. In the beginning of No Exit the stage directions show the audience the room. ââ¬Å"A drawing-room in Second Empire styleâ⬠(Sartre 3). This tells the reader that the play is in a one room set. ââ¬Å"Then weââ¬â¢re to stay by ourselves, the three of usâ⬠(Sartre 10). One of the characters, Inez, is stating the fact that only three people are to reside in the room. This will create some tension, because No Exit is based on hell. The whole idea of hell to everyone is that it comes with a demon figure that is suppose to torture everyone. ââ¬Å"The racks and red-hot pincers and all the other paraphernalia?â⬠(Sartre 4). This is the regular hell, but in Sartreââ¬â¢s point of view hell is something different. He believes that hell is other people. This is where t he setting comes into play. Sartre puts the three different personalities in the same room to turn th... ...e to the question is obvious. This reveals the idea of bias between characters. Sam and Willie now both want to injury Hally, while Hally has injured Sam. In this play, Sam and Willie are against Hally, and in No Exit by the end Garcin is trying to impress Inez and Estelle is left alone. The setting also has a major impact on the audience. The one room forces the audience to be more attentive to the entrance and exits of the characters. Since the audience is familiar with the set by the end of the first scene, they can focus more on the dialogues and the stage directions. The audience is more involved in a play when the set is not changed. The audience can then interpret the literary elements of the play. Also in the case of ââ¬Å"Master Haroldâ⬠â⬠¦and the boys, Fugard had to move the play around South African ghettoes. This made the transportation easy and efficient.

Sleeping Late Essay -- essays research papers
à à à à à Life is so busy sometimes we donââ¬â¢t get enough sleep. Some days our bodies need more sleep than others. Some people like to sleep in after a busy week at work, or a long night of partying. Others feel that sleeping in can help them relieve some stress. Trying a few of these trips may help you to sleep in.à à à à à à à à à à In order to sleep in longer, you should plan ahead for the weather. For example, when the weather is going to be hot and muggy, crank up the air conditioner. When your body gets too hot, you will wake up. Just keeping your body cool will help you feel more relaxed so you can get those few extra hours of rest. If the weather forecast calls for a steady rain crack open the windows so the rhythm of the soothing rain drops help you fall into a deeper more relaxed sleep. à à à à à Another important part of sleeping in is a dark room. When too much light breaks into the room, you might have trouble falling or staying asleep. Light makes it easier to stay awake, thus making it harder for you to stop thinking. If you have curtains, close them almost all the way. Roll mini-blinds with the blades in the upward direction, because if they are rolled down when the sun comes up, too much light will come in. As the sleeper you want some light in the room, just a lot.à à à à à Hunger will also prevent you from sleeping in. Near your bed keep a few handy items. I...

Ekpeye People of Nigeria Essay
It became a serious problem that the elderly indigenes of the town had to cry out for help so that their innocent youths would not be taught this new way of life. It is true that there are many tribes in Nigeria that are still holding to the moral standard of their culture. But in a country where a lot of people migrate everyday away from their tribe and culture to other peopleââ¬â¢s culture for reasons like admission into higher institutions of learning, youth service, employment, etc; it becomes imperative to consider and treat cohabitation as a very serious anomaly. The Ekpeye tribe, one of the numerous tribes in Rivers state of Nigeria is a very good example of the tribes that are now involved in cohabitation. Working among the Ekpeye youths, one will discover a high rate of premarital sexual relationship among the youths. Many of these youths cohabiting with one another are not unbelievers; many couples in the local churches are not married, at least according to the customary law. Majority of these young people came together as a result of premarital sexual relationships which resulted in unwanted pregnancy. Sad enough, many of these people are church members serving in one capacity or another; in fact, there are pastors among them. It has become the order of the day, a common thing that goes on from one town to the other. Majority of these youths, including Christians go into it with the knowledge of their parents and community leaders. This is gradually becoming a serious temptation to many Christian youths who want to uphold the standard of God for marriage and stay faithful to marriage vows. Ità à is also standing as a barrier to evangelize those outside the church. This research paper is focused on this people group with the intention of knowing their marriage custom, how cohabitation gained access into the culture, the way cohabitation is practiced and the effects that cohabitation has on the cohabiting families and the church. Ekpeye Tribe and Its Marriage Custom Ekpeye tribe is one of the local tribes in Rivers state. Ekpeye tribe as seen in the map is in Ahoada East and Ahoada West local government areas in Rivers state. There are four traditional groups in Ekpeye kingdom. They are Akoh, Ubie, Upata and Igbuduya. 8 The main occupations of Ekpeye traditional society are farming, hunting and fishing.
